I think I have to move here. All my life, I’ve been wanting to see a bear, or any big carni/omnivore for that matter, but so far, I’ve been totally out of luck. A couple of years ago, I missed a lynx (because Lina, who was sitting in the passenger seat screamed so high in excitement that I thought we were about to crash), and even though I’ve spend a substantial amount of time in the wast forests of Västerbotten, I have only been lucky enough to spot a red fox a couple of times. I’ve always thought that my dream job would include spotting animals, but until I came here, it has mainly been them spotting me. Well, not any more. First, it was that bear poo on the No name trail, then the bear that went through our garbage but that I never saw, and then, THEN, as we were comming into Ridgeway on our way to Telluride, a big brown bear (a big brown black bear to be honest, but BIG) ran across the highway. Can you believe it?! I was holding my cell phone, but got so excited that I didnt manage to snap a photo. I was shivering like crazy, and giggling of course, and fittering what ever that means. Luckily, Maria managed to snap a very clear photo evidence of the incident (if you look REALLY hard, you can see a brown running something to the right in the photo)
Yesterday, me and Martin did a tour on the Wasatch trail (more on that later). As we headed down through the pass, Martin spotted a relatively big brown animal that was observing us. It followed us (or, more likely, tried to hide from us) for about a km, and made very high noises like IEHHH! (probably very annoyed that we disturbed it, sorry about that little fellow). Today, I realized that what we saw must have been a marmot. Wohooo! Have you seen one? I didnt catch a photo, but I hade to google them. They look like the most stupidest animal on earth. Gotta love it. Man, I wish I could have come closer without getting it more scared than it already was.
Finally, today, I, Martin and Maria went up and down the Deep Creek trail, and whoops, ran into a porcupine. That, I never even imagined I would see. Awesome! Once again, we of course scared the shit out of the poor little creature. Dang. Hope we didn’t traumatize the little fellow too much.
