Are not that small when you don’t have legs that work. They are big, even huge sometimes. So I see them as challenges. Yesterday, I challenged myself to get some clean clothes, do the laundry, take a shower and eat lunch with my parents. Sounds like a really soft day, right? Wrong. I was a wreck by the end of the day. To get clean clothes (so I wouldn’ have to do the laundry naked), I had to climb those 20-something stairs to the second floor, AND get the clothes with me down. Backpacks are good. Winding stairs are not so good. Going down them with two broken legs is scarier than climbing a colouir. But I managed. It took a lot of energy, but I got down with a clean t-shirt and some underwear. Wohoo! Time for laundry. In the basement. Pack it up, pack it in, let it begin. Backpack on, crutches out, charge!
Time to shower. Take out the black plastic bags and start wrapping. Get in position, work that core (to keep the water from splashing all over the floor and thereby making it lethal to walk on with crutches), work your groints (keep them legs up!). Splish, splash, GET IT OVER WITH!! Having a cast and some surgery wounds that you are not allowed to get water on is a very effective instrument for being climate friendly in the shower. Since it takes such a helluva time and energy to get into the shower, I’m swift as a shark once I’m in it. Right. All clean and dandy. Time to hit the parents. One foot in front of the other, again. But I’ve done this before! I have decided that I need to walk farther every day, so yesterday I chose do a detour on the way home.
Coming around the corner onto ÖK (my home road), I realized that I was standing at the same spot as I did 2 weeks ago. That time, it felt like running a marathon just getting up there (about 20 meters from my home) and back. Today I felt as if that distance was nothing, I was almost home. Progress!! When I got home, I collapsed but I felt very proud of my self. Its the small things in life. Today, the sun is out (I know, I didn’t believe it either at first. Didn’t really remember that it existed. But it is actually out there). Its Saturday and I and Maria have decided that we are going to challenge ourselves to go down town and eat pastry.
